Protect people from slips and falls in restaurants

| Jun 12, 2020 | Personal Injury

If restaurant owners do not maintain safe premises, their patrons and employees may incur injuries after a slip and fall. Many of these accidents result from preventable circumstances.

Slips and falls are more common than restaurant owners may realize. According to FoodManagement.com, these incidents cause the most injuries in the hospitality industry. There are several steps people can take to remove hazards before they cause an accident.

Maintain safe premises

People may not see tripping or slipping hazards if the lighting is poor. Restaurant owners should make sure all walkways are well-lit and clear of clutter. If there is a spill, employees should wipe up the liquid immediately and put up signs so patrons know to use caution.

Additionally, people may slip if the floors are too slick. Restaurant owners may want to install high-traction flooring. If this is not possible, they should use non-skid mats. Sometimes people may incur injuries if restaurant employees do not use these mats correctly. The owner should make sure people do not place mats on wet floors. Additionally, people should replace torn mats so they do not become tripping hazards.

Make safety a priority

One of the best ways to prevent accidents is to emphasize safety. According to Restaurant Technologies, restaurant owners should conduct safety training each quarter so every employee knows the safety policies. If some employees do not speak English fluently, people should provide a translated safety manual. Additionally, restaurant owners should model safe practices. They should always use safety equipment and wipe up spills as soon as they happen.

By taking simple precautions, restaurant owners can prevent accidents on their premises.
